Midmorning, Marcus heard the commotion but ignored it and continued writing the email he was working on. A few people left their desks to investigate but the noise became louder. He was considering closing his office door to block out the noise when a shriek cut through above the other noise and he jumped to his feet. He followed the others, heading towards the office kitchen. Marcus overtook them all and saw the source of the shrieking was Amy. The cause of her shrieks was an unconscious Janelle, sprawled out on the kitchen floor. Blood was splattered over her chest and Lucy was standing over her.

His throat closed over and a cool sweat erupted over his body. ‘What’s going on?’ he managed to whisper.

‘Everyone back,’ Lucy said, calmly, yet with volume and authority. Marcus stood where he was. Frozen.

‘You too, Marcus. Make sure Amy’s okay, but please don’t let her back in here. Tell her Janelle will be fine.’

When he didn’t move, Lucy touched his shoulder and pushed him gently back. Her warm touch jolted him out of his inertia. He coughed to clear his throat.

‘Would someone tell me what on earth is going on?’ he said, sounding a bit too much like he was panicking for his liking.

‘Janelle was cutting an apple and sliced her hand. Badly. Then Amy screamed and now Janelle has fainted. Does anyone know if Janelle has any underlying health conditions?’

He still couldn’t move. There was a lot of blood. So much blood. It couldn’t just have come from her hand. Lucy crouched down with a towel and wrapped it around Janelle’s hand. She tried to rouse Janelle by gently stroking her head.

‘Marcus, does she have any underlying medical issues?’ Lucy prompted again.

He shook his head. He had no idea. ‘Could someone please find a cushion or something?’ Lucy asked.

His limbs were weak. Shaky. Pull yourself together, man.

Daphne turned and left—to fulfil Lucy’s orders, he hoped. Just then, Janelle started to slowly regain consciousness. Lucy spoke softly. ‘Welcome back, how are you feeling?’

Janelle murmured and tried to sit.

‘Relax. You’ve just fainted. And you cut your hand, but you’re going to be fine. You’re probably going to need some stitches. Would you like me to take you to the hospital?’

‘Ambulance!’ Marcus said.

Janelle moaned. Daphne came back with a cushion from the couch. Lucy slid it under Janelle’s legs.

‘Shouldn’t you put that under her head?’ he asked.

Lucy shot him a look that he would have described as exasperated. No one, except his mother, had looked at him like that for years. She didn’t even respond but turned back to Janelle.

‘It’s up to you. If you relax and can stand we can probably just get a cab. You’ve just had a fright.’

‘Has someone called an ambulance?’ Marcus asked again.

‘I have,’ said Daphne, appearing again behind him.

He noticed a wry grin on Lucy’s face and he knew that she believed an ambulance was overkill.

‘I’m her employer, I have duties to her and I say we call an ambulance.
